Study Links Aging in Brain to Sleep-Related Memory Decline

Study Links Aging in Brain to Sleep-Related Memory Decline

Published: January 27, 2013

Summary:
Scientists have known the ability to remember newly learned information declines with age, but they don't know why. A new study may provide the answer. Structural brain changes occurring naturally over time interfere with sleep quality, which in turn blunts the ability to store memories for the long term. Previous research had found that the brain region behind the forehead, tends to lose volume with age. Part of this region helps sustain quality sleep, which is critical for new memories.

My Opinion:
I think that it is good that  scientists have discovered why sleep-related memories have declined. Sleep is very important in our lives. Sleep is in every one's lives and everyone needs it to get through the day. It is basically a rest for our brains so they can start up again tomorrow. Memories are also very important to us and we need to sleep to help our brains rest and remember the memories that we have. This is a good thing that they discovered why sleep-related memories have declined so they can fix the problem.

Summary:

FILE PHOTO: In this Monday, Jan. 14, 2013, file photo provided by Harpo Studios Inc., Lance Armstrong listens as he is interviewed by talk show host Oprah Winfrey during taping for the show "Oprah and Lance Armstrong: The Worldwide Exclusive" in Austin, Texas. (George Burns /AP) Lance Armstrong and his attorney have decided that Mr. Armstrong will not meet the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency's deadline for him to answer questions under oath, instead he would rather participate in an international conversation to "clear the air" about what he has done in the past. After years of denial Armstrong had finally confessed last week in an interview with Oprah Winfrey that he used performance-enhancing drugs to cheat his way to a record seven Tour de France wins. Mr. Armstrong would like to coordinate the truth to everyone. Lance Armstrong, 41, said that the lifetime ban on him is like a "death penalty" they put on him. This was announced when he was on the Oprah Winfrey show when he confessed that he was taking performance-enhanced drugs to help him win and perform better when competing.

My Opinion:
I think that he should be announcing and telling everyone that he is sorry for cheating. It is the right thing to do after what he did in the past. I think that he should announce it internationally because everyone should know what he did to win seven Tour de France wins. He should especially say sorry to the fans he had and the followers he had because they believed in him the most and they looked up to him as a huge role model. He needs to make a lot of mad people happy again because of what he did.

Summary:

Leadership candidate Kathleen Wynne waves after winning the leadership bid to become the new Premier of Ontario at the Ontario Liberal leadership convention in Toronto January 26, 2013. (MARK BLINCH /REUTERS)Ontario's incoming premier Kathleen Wynne has hit the ground running, she has been engaging with the opposition just hours after she won the Liberal leadership race. She is also calling her first caucus meeting for Tuesday. Ms. Wynne is also made it that she will collaborate with the entire Liberal caucus and with the opposition at a news conference on Sunday. Ms. Wynne has a good conversation with Progressive Conservative Leader Tim Hudak on Saturday evening. It was a brief discussion on the phone but it clearly aimed at encouraging the election-ready sounding Opposition Leader. She has not talked to New Democratic Leader Andrea Horwath about who will be her new cabinet. Ms. Wynne is also pledged to bring the legislature back by Feb.19. One of her first priorities will be to bring back the peace with the labour teachers and in the province's schools.

My Opinion:
I think that she should be elected as soon as possible and be brought into power to ensure that her pledges will be possible to complete. I also think that it is a good idea to restore peace with the teachers and the province's schools. This is a good idea to bring back the peace of the schools because kids need to be learning everyday to succeed later in the future and to get a job. When the teachers start teaching again and working hard then the students will too which will ensure great grades and good learning habits.

Summary:

Chef Jonathan Gushue (Fernando Morales/The Globe and Mail) Jonathan Gushue, a executive chef from Langdon Hall has been reported missing. The executive chef worked the evening of December 29, just the Saturday before New Year's Eve. He made a 100 kilometer drive to have dinner with a friend. Jonathan Gushue stayed at the tony Park Hyatt on Avenue Road. He checked out two days later and no one has heard of him since. Jonathan Gushue's family were worried about him because he did not contact them for a while when he disappeared. The family contacted the police because of how long Mr. Gushue has been gone. Mr. Gushue had done this before but for not as long, only for two at the most. He is a father of 3 children and he was originally from Newfoundland. There is a theory that Mr. Gushue is going by the name of Jonathan Herder, substituting his middle name for his last name. But there are no signs of him returning any of his family calls or others.

My Opinion
I think that Jonathan Gushue was killed or murdered because he would be returning calls or texts that he is getting from work or from his family. This is the first time he has been gone for a long time without anyone knowing where his location is and he has a family with three small children. I think they need to try and find the friend that  Mr. Gushue was going meet and make him a suspect and start questioning him. The public was also assured that Mr. Gushue was missing, if Mr. Gushue was still alive then he would know about this and call in to tell everyone that he is doing just fine. I think that the police should start figuring out what to do for the next step and follow through on what they are going to do because Mr. Gushue has been missing for along time.

Oil sands development polluting Alberta: study

Oil sands development polluting Alberta: study

Summary:
Athabasca oil sands digger, Albian Sands, Alberta, Canada. (Dieter Blum /Shell)Oil sands developments are polluting Alberta and their remote lakes with rising toxic carcinogen (a substance capable of causing cancer). Studies have found levels of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons have risen dramatically as the same pace as development in sex nearby lakes. It is well established that some of the lakes are carcinogenic, according to the American Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry. Some carcinogenic lakes have been linked to infertility, immune disorders, and fish mutation. The PAH pollution level is still low but is rising rapidly. Arguments made by provincial officials who have said that, because oil seeps naturally into rivers around the oil sands, contaminants are mostly natural.

My Opinion:
I think it is good that the economy is rising because of the oil that we sell and use from Alberta but since oil sand developments are rising rapidly which is not good for the environment. I think that the environment should be taken more seriously and we also need to take care of the environment for the future. Our kids and the next generation will be living in how we leave the environment. If we keep on going on this route, different environments will suffer a lot more than in the past. Many people are polluting the earth just like the oil sand developments. I think that they should still carry on with what they are doing but I don't think that they should overlord no finding and drilling oil because the toxic carcinogen will rise even more quickly.

Summary:
Vanessa Maltese, winner of the 2012 RBC Painting Competition (Erika Jacobs)Toronto artist Vanessa Maltese triumphed over fourteen other finalists this Thursday evening at a ceremony in Toronto. Vanessa Maltese was this year's winner of the RBC Canadian Painting Competition. Maltese was one of the 536 painters who entered in the competition. 15 Finalists were chosen from these three religions (Western, Central and Eastern). Before the competition originally focused on artists in Toronto, then it went national in 2001. The three artists that won from each religion were Venessa Maltese, Betino Assa, age 28, a Bulgarian-born  MFA student at Montreal's Concorida University, and 30-year-old Katie Lucy Lyle, an MFA graduate from the University of Victoria. The three winning works are no part of RBC's permanent corporate collection, they are on public view along with the 12 finalists paintings.

My Opinion
I think that it is wonderful that the finalists got their paintings picked and got recognized of how well done their paintings are. I am glad that someone was picked as one of the finalists from Toronto because think that Toronto and the people that live in Toronto are very passionate about art which made this competition very hard to get in to the finals because of how many paintings were submitted into the competition. The paintings must have been very well done because 536 paintings were entered and only 15 made the finals. The finalists really have a chance to prove to the world that they are very good and that they can make a living off of art. I think that the artists who didn't make the finals still have a chance to get better.

Ontario Threatens to block elementary teachers from striking

Ontario Threatens to block elementary teachers from striking
http://www.theglobeandmail.com/news/politics/ontario-threatens-to-block-elementary-teachers-from-striking/article5794887/

Published Thursday, Nov. 29 2012, 12:59 PM EST

Summary:
Ontario Minister of Education Laurel Broten (Moe Doiron /The Globe and Mail)
School teachers from elementary schools are walking off the job next month and the Ontario Government is threatening to block the commotion and the actions of the teachers. Elementary school teachers are trying to go on strike to follow the other high school teachers that are already on strike right now. The government is now worried and annoyed of how many school teachers are wanting to go on strike. Many teachers in high schools have been withdrawing voluntary services, which includes coaching and supervising clubs, since September 2012. Teachers in Ontario are now frustrated that the new legislation introduced by the governing Liberals that dictates the terms of their contracts and restricts their ability to strike. The province now has the power to end any walkouts and can act quickly to stop them when needed. Since this has happened, there are no more indications of any school board that are poised to give the 72-hours notice of strike action. The province has not gave the right to ban strike action but they built in the legaslation to respond when they need to.

My Opinion:
I think that the teachers are taking this way to far. The students need to keep on learning the material everyday or they will not want to anymore. Now that elemantary school teachers are going on strike the kids are in a bad situation for learning. This teachers are now punishing the kids for the problems they have with the government. The teachers need to find another way and a better way to say that they are unhappy with the government and not take their frustrations out on the kids by going on strike and affecting their learning. When teachers go on strike I they don't think of the students in the school that they are affecting. In the future, these students will have a hard time because of this incident that the teachers are doing. If the teachers know that they are affecting the students, I think tha they should stop striking right away and find another way to tell the government that they are unhappy with them.
