Study Links Aging in Brain to Sleep-Related Memory Decline
Published: January 27, 2013
Summary:
Scientists have known the ability to remember newly learned information declines with age, but they don't know why. A new study may provide the answer. Structural brain changes occurring naturally over time interfere with sleep quality, which in turn blunts the ability to store memories for the long term. Previous research had found that the brain region behind the forehead, tends to lose volume with age. Part of this region helps sustain quality sleep, which is critical for new memories.
My Opinion:
I think that it is good that scientists have discovered why sleep-related memories have declined. Sleep is very important in our lives. Sleep is in every one's lives and everyone needs it to get through the day. It is basically a rest for our brains so they can start up again tomorrow. Memories are also very important to us and we need to sleep to help our brains rest and remember the memories that we have. This is a good thing that they discovered why sleep-related memories have declined so they can fix the problem.
